Most of us treat focus like a switch: flip it on, hold it down through willpower, feel guilty when it slips.
But attention doesn't work like a switch.
It works like a tide, and once you know its rhythm, you can stop fighting it.
In the 1960s, the sleep researcher Nathaniel Kleitman noticed that the roughly 90-minute cycle governing our stages of sleep doesn't switch off when we wake.
It keeps running all day.
That dip isn't laziness.
It's the bottom of a wave.
This reframes the whole problem.
If you try to grind straight through the dip, you get the worst of both worlds: low-quality work and no real rest.
But if you plan your day around the wave, a focused block of up to ~90 minutes and then a genuine break, you ride the alertness while it's there and recover before the next climb.
Why one buzz costs you twenty minutes
The wave is fragile, and a phone is very good at shattering it.
The damage from a single interruption is far bigger than the interruption itself, for two reasons the research has measured precisely.

A ten-second glance can quietly cost you the rest of the wave.
Put those together and the maths is brutal.
A notification isn't a ten-second tax on your attention.
It can flatten an entire 90-minute cycle.
The residue drags on your concentration, and the climb back to depth eats the time you had left.
How to ride the wave instead
- Work in blocks, not marathons.
Aim for up to ~90 minutes of single-task focus, then stop on purpose. - Take a real break, away from a screen.
Stand up, look at something far away, move.
The dip is when your brain files what you just did; scrolling through it just starts a new attention-residue problem. - Protect the block completely.
Not "fewer" notifications.
None.
The only interruption that costs nothing is the one that can't reach you.
That last point is the hard one, because a phone in reach will always find a way in.
The most reliable version of "protect the block" is to make the interruptions physically impossible for the length of the block, not to trust yourself to ignore them.
